I’d spotted a new Japanese place called ‘Wakaze’ on High Street in Leicester so I thought I’d take a closer look. The menu in the window showed it had plenty of veggie/vegan options so I popped in with my partner. We sat down and ordered a few dishes, staff were friendly but our waitress was quite young and she didn’t understand what vegan meant. I explained that I didn’t eat ANY animal products and could she please check our order with the chef to make sure it didn’t contain egg, milk, fish sauce or oyster sauce. After a couple of minutes she came back and told us that all of the dishes we had chosen were suitable. The place has a large open kitchen so we could see that she had actually gone and spoken with the chef, I think she then understood what I meant by ‘vegan’.
We ordered the tofu tempura, spring rolls and vegetable gyoza (dumplings), followed by the udon noodle soup with vegetable tempura. The food arrived promptly and was piping hot, the udon soup with tempura was really fresh and tasty as were the gyoza. The spring rolls were a bit of a let down as they looked like the ‘party’ type bought from the supermarket and the tofu was a bit tasteless, it just needed seasoning properly. Overall the food was alright, can’t say I’ll be rushing back but as the place is new I guess they’re still finding their way. Let’s see if they stand the test of time!
