I had a couple of friends come and stay in Leicester for the weekend and we decided to head out for some food on Friday night. My friends aren’t vegan but they were more than happy to try out some vegan food (I’m always raving about how good it is!). So I decided to take them to Belgrave Road, Leicester’s home of delicious Indian food. While we checked out the many places to eat we decided upon Chai Paani. I’d been there before and always found the food to be good, although service can be hit and miss so I was a little nervous. They serve a range of cuisine (Indian, Indo/Chinese, Italian) but we decided to stick with Indian. Instead of the usual curry and rice, I convinced my friends to try some of the lesser known typical ‘street food’ dishes, let’s just say they weren’t disappointed. We ordered a couple of dhosa (crispy pancakes with a spiced potato filling), some crispy aubergine, chilli gobi (battered cauliflower – not as hot as the name suggests) and some ambli chips (fries covered in tamarind sauce). I explained to the waitress that I didn’t eat animal products, I think the term ‘vegan’ would have confused her, she checked with the chef and told us that all of the dishes were suitable. We all enjoyed the meal and with it being a Friday night the place was quite busy with a good atmosphere. My friends were seriously impressed with the chilli gobi, they commented saying that they never thought cauliflower could taste so good! All in all it was a good meal with decent service and with the bill coming in at just over £30 it was a very affordable night out. Definitely worth a try if you like Indian food but fancy a change from the typical curry.
